History of Orem, Utah

The city's original name was Provo Bench. However, in 1919 the city was renamed, "Orem" after Walter C. Orem. In the early 1900s this gentleman operated a railway line near the area. The need of a water system for the region was one of the main reasons for the city's incorporation of 1919. In the early 1940s Orem became home to Geneva Steel Works. This company provided many residents of Orem with employment. However, recently there have been concerns of environmental damage caused by Geneva Steel Works. Another major change for Orem came forth from the city's farmers fields being converted into shopping centers. Orem has now become Central Utah's commercial and technological centre.

As of 2000, it was determined that the City of Orem held about 84,324 people, 23,382 households, and 19,079 families. The racial demographics of the city was 90.80% White, 0.33% African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.86% Pacific Islander, 3.64% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. 8.56% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median income for a household then was $47,529, and the median income for a family was $51,214. The city's per capita income then was $16,590.

Education in Orem, Utah

Schools in Orem are under the leadership of the Alpine School District. There are three high schools, three junior high schools and 16 elementary schools part of the Alpine School District. In addition, Orem is also home to two colleges and universities. They are Utah State Valley University and Stevens-Henager College. Brigham Young University is one of USA's largest private universities and it is located in Provo, a city adjacent to Orem.
